The 52nd AGM of the Fleetwood Music & Arts Festival - 2010

"Mr Vice President, Mr Chairman and fellow members of the Festival.

Once again I am pleased to present the Secretary's report for another successful Festival. The performers and adjudicators all did well and their efforts were appreciated by stewards and audiences throughout the classes.

The standard of performance was high and the championship classes reflected this. The atmosphere of the schools classes on Friday afternoon was particularly refreshing, both vocal Saturdays were a pleasure to listen to. Long standing performer, Gillian Teague won 7 individual classes and was a worthy winner of the Vena McLean Trophy.

The adult piano was disappointing in the number of entries but it did provide a platform for the young pianist, Thomas Kelly. The following Saturday was very well attended and produced two new champions in Ella Ronson and Sam Hampson.

Despite the awful weather there were many performers and supporters who made it to Rossall School for the Speech classes. The championship classes in the Museum Theatre provided special performances, the Hardingham sisters Elly and Holly winning their respective championships. It was also pleasing to see the new class of Own Composition earned a mark of 90 in the 16+ class

I noticed that last year I reported that too much work was done by too few people and this is still the case. Recruiting new Committee members must be a high priority for us all during the coming year. There were clearly not enough stewards for the classes at Rossall School, and trophies arriving on the day, in some cases after the class had finished, makes no-one's job any easier. Using Rossall School for the first time was obviously difficult, especially as the weather meant a difficult walk from the car-park to the classes extremely difficult. It was a learning curve for all of us there but the hospitality and help given to us by Nicola Mason and her helpers was very much appreciated.

During the course of this year we have been able to respond to new legislation with regard to children and vulnerable adults. Accordingly most of us have completed a CRB check, the rest of the committee will soon follow.

Over the two full days, plus Friday afternoon of the Festival we held 133 classes, 20 more than last year, 12 championships, 2 more than last year, employed 14 adjudicators(1), 4 accompanists and prepared 16 rooms in 4 different venues.

55 Princes Way continued as the Festival Restaurant well up to the usual standard thanks to Jean and Florence and her team, which this year included Judith Brown. I would also like to mention those who provide refreshment at the various venues, particularly at Rossall, who opened their brand new cafe earlier than scheduled in order that audience and performers could have access.

It was good to hear positive comments from adjudicators and stewards for they appreciate the mammoth task that organising the Festival involves. I would like to thank all of the committee for their support and commitment to the Festival.

Most successful in terms of entries was the schools afternoon which saw 3 new schools sending entries, Chaucer, Our Lady Blackpool and Queen Elizabeth Bromyard. It made for a very pleasant afternoon of performance.

There was no one yet to challenge Shakespeare's hold on the trophies but St Wulstan ran them very close. In all other disciplines there has been a drop in entries. Most disappointing was the adult piano classes, there were actually only 3 people making up the classes. Clearly this has to be carefully looked at as we cannot afford to pay adjudicators a full day's wage of £191 pounds + expenses.

The Festival website continues to be a useful communication tool and is increasing in usage, especially during syllabus publication and Festival time. Thank you, Rosy, for your continued development of the site.

Since last year we have lost Beattie from the committee and not been able to replace her. As I said earlier more committee members has to be our priority.

I would like to thank Rev Ayoma for his support this year. It was especially pleasing that he was able to present the Instrumental Championship Trophy at Trinity. Although we have not covered all our costs this year I would like to thank all our sponsors and members for their continued support. We were not able to receive the grant from Lancashire Council this year due in part to a change of regime at County Council. However, Clive Grunshaw has assured us he will support us this year and make sure that the paperwork is completed and handed in by the new due date.

What of the future?

Personnel is the key issue for us here at Fleetwood. We are all doing too much, and this was very clear at Rossall where we were short of stewards and experience as it was a new venue. Add to this the dreadful weather and we very nearly collapsed under the strain. Trophies were presented late because they were not in place on time, spectators had to queue for tickets as there was no one there to sell them, adjudicators were left to find there own way as we were all running round trying to get stewards up to speed. It was a nightmare start and one that we must give very careful thought to this year.

On a positive note we have introduced several new classes over the past few years and these are growing in entries. We must continue to respond to what is happening with young people and modern performing trending. Without youngsters entering our Festival we will continue to drip entries.

Allied to this is getting teachers of music and drama to support the Festival. We are still a major platform for performance for all levels and the local area needs to be fully aware of what we do. As part of this we hope to make a presentation to the Rotary Club of Fleetwood, already firm supporters and sponsors of the Festival, so that they are fully aware of what we do.

Finally I would like to express thanks to all those associated with and supporting our Festival, to stewards, adjudicators, competitors and teachers; to the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, both of which made important contributions when presenting trophies: to the Rotary Club of Fleetwood for their time and help with transport as well as sponsorship: to Denis, and the committee, of course, for all their hard work and "suffering" on the Festival's behalf.

Thank you."
